Словарь содержит около 11 тыс. синонимических рядов, состоящих из слов и словосочетаний, тождественных или близких по значению. Словарь подсказывает читателю, как избежать повторения одного и того же слова в тексте, чем его можно заменить. При многих синонимах указывается их сочетаемость и стилистическая принадлежность. Настоящее издание является 11-м, переработанным и дополненным изданием.
Особую ценность представляет большое количество устарелых слов (в том числе разговорных и просторечных), которые сегодня можно найти только в старых академических словарях.
В словарь включены два приложения: списки образных синонимов некоторых географических названий и имен знаменитых людей.
