Тест Карен Маховер (1949) заключался в следующем: обследуемого просили «нарисовать человека» и «нарисовать человека противоположного пола». Проективные рисунки часто использовались в клинике. Одновременно с изучением рисунков задавался ряд вопросов: предлагалось назвать образование персонажей, их цели жизни и др.
Книга Карен Маховер дожидалась перевода почти полвека и увидела свет в России лишь в конце 90-х. В 1968 г. использование рисунков в диагностической практике было дополнено системой оценок для выявления эмоциональных затруднений обследуемого человека. За десятилетия, прошедшие с момента опубликования тестов, накопился обширный и весьма противоречивый опыт их использования, породивший сильные сомнения и упреки в их адрес.
