Генерал-майор Виталий Никольский в своей книге впервые подробно рассказал о деятельности оперативной агентурной разведки, которой он посвятил большую часть своей работы в ГРУ.
Сначала оперативной агентурой Никольский занимался в центральном аппарате Разведупра Генштаба Красной Армии, где служил с 1938 по 1941 гол, выполнял задания на фронте в первые месяцы Великой Отечественной, создавая разведгруппы и городах, которые могли быть захвачены противником, снимался агентурой и разведывательных отделах 10-й армии. Западного и Сталинградского фронтов (1941 - 1943), затем вновь в центральном аппарате ГРУ (1943 - 1947), и 1944 - 1945 гг. готовил разведчиков для работы в тылу врага в московском Серебряном Бору. Виталий Александрович в своих "записках" называет имена и описывает деятельность многих героев "невидимого фронта", большую часть которых он знал лично.
