The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is the first novel from author Junot Díaz. The book was released in September 2007 to highly positive reviews.

The novel is narrated by Yunior, a character Díaz has used in his book Drown. The story follows the life of Oscar, an overweight, nerdy Dominican boy, from childhood, to his untimely death as an adult. Yunior tells of Oscar's struggle to make friends, lose weight, and find a woman to love him. Other characters in the novel are Oscar's sister, Lola, their mother Belicia, and their grandmother La Inca.

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, although a work of fiction, does give detailed background information about the Dominican Republic and La Era de Trujillo.

 

Critical reception

It won the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction in 2007.

Time magazine's Lev Grossman named it one of the Top 10 Fiction Books of 2007, ranking it at #1 and praising it as "a massive, heaving, sparking tragicomedy".^[1][2]
