Description
Roy Sorensen, A Brief History of the Paradox: Philosophy and the Labyrinths of the Mind
Oxford University Press | ISBN 0195159039 | 2003 | PDF | 1.95 MB | 415 pages
This book is guided by an anthropological hypothesis: paradoxes developed from the riddles of Greek folklore (asdid the oracles of Delphi, Christian catechisms, and the game of charades). Accordingly, I begin classically with the Greek philosophers. They refined informal verbal dueling into “dialectic,” the procedure best known through Plato’s dialogues. The efforts of the Greeks were improved in turn, yielding contemporary logic and dialectical conceptions of history and science.
