Persley (The Doyle Foundation, Scotland) and MacIntyre (formerly of the International Development Research Center, Canada) present 12 individual country studies looking at the development of biotechnological research in agriculture in developing nations. The studies explore policy, economic, and technological issues in their examinations of China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, Egypt, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Colombia, and Costa Rica. Also included is an introductory overview examining issues of sustainable development, possibilities for providing food security for the rural and urban poor, and specific commercial applications now in use or being studied for deployment.
