Description

Topics in mathematics

The aim of this booklet is to develop the theory of logarithms from a geometric point of view. This is done by considering a special kind of "curvilinear trapezoid" and defining logarithms as areas of such curvilinear trapezoids. The basic properties of logarithms are then deduced from the properties of the areas of these figures. The development is facilitated by the introduction of certain simple concepts and results from integral calculus.

The reader need not have had any previous experience with logarithms or calculus. Only an acquaintance with polynomial functions and their graphic representation, geometric progressions and the concept of a limit is required.
