Spring is here and the country’s tourism industry is bracing itself for a bumpy ride. Most pundits say that the writing’s on the wall and this is going to be the worst year for decades. This is bad news as tourism contibutes more than 15% of the GDP and more than 20% of the employment in the country. Many fear that a decrease of about 15-20% in tourism figures will cause a domino effect immediately affter summer in an economy already too weak to fight the crisis.

There is, however, a more optimistic school of thought which says that, faced with economic uncertainty, holidaymakers are holding back their decision until the last minute - hence the drop in bookings so far - and that those less affected by the crisis will take their holidays as usual this summer.

Those who do come in the end should be able to enjoy a silver lining to the crisis cloud. That is - we hope - lower prices, better quality services and better value for money across the board.It is only regretable that this ‘upgrade’ in the tourist product of Greece must come as a result of such a serious crisis, but if it happens, it will be a welcome basis on which the country can builld for the coming years.
