The book offers good practical advice that can be used in the development of a Business Intelligence (BI) project / initiative. The over all road map provides a check list of issues to consider and offers a place to start in planning your own initiative. It is a good reference for individuals starting a BI project for the first time. First of all the term "Business Intelligence" means different things to different people. Where I work BI means the user interface 'front end' technology of a data warehouse (think Cognos and Business Objects). However this book is about the entire system ETL, DB, user interface. It does a decent job of explaining the entire system, organization, and process. Pros: Comprehensive, even has two chapters focusing on metadata, which is usually overlooked by similar books despite it's enormous importance. Cons: Not enough info about specific products. For instance, a process is described for determining whether to purchase or to make an ETL system but not specific info on, for instance, Informatica's strengths and weaknesses as a product and a company. When dealing with big vendors there's no way to know if the product is junk or not by looking at the literature and talking to salesman. You need the scoop from someone who is experienced using the product, someone you can trust, and this book does not provide that kind of info.
