Joël Cornette propose une vision renouvelée de l’absolutisme. Les recherches récentes ont en effet totalement repensé l’approche de la monarchie d’Ancien Régime qualifiée “d'absolue”, dont le règne de Louis XIV, Roi-Soleil, constitua l’apogée. Quelle était la nature de l’autorité exercée par le souverain ? Sur quels fondements théoriques, imaginaires, sacrés aussi, reposait-elle ? Fut-elle aussi absolue qu’on l’a souvent prétendu ? Les travaux des historiens bousculent quelque peu les idées reçues. Entre la représentation qu’a voulue donner d’elle-même la monarchie et la pratique concrète du pouvoir sur le terrain, la distance peut être grande.
