Description

There are a fair number of books that discuss how to use individual products or technologies for web-to-database connections. These books may be appropriate choices once a software package has been chosen, but they provide no guidance in making a choice among the many competing products. Other books discuss database design and maintenance using a particular database software package. Again, these books are fine if you have to use a particular product, but provide little information on the comparative advantages and disadvantages of the product. The few books that discuss general database structure and design are aimed at professional database administrators and read like textbooks. Technical managers may not have enough of a background in web or database development to feel comfortable making decisions.

The goal of this book is to help you understand the general ways that web database products work and to provide practical performance information on a large cross-section of the specific software products currently available. The book will provide the necessary background and reference information on database technology and design, the various models or frameworks for putting databases on the Web, and information and comparisons of the various products currently available. Its main goal is to help you choose the appropriate type of product and to zero in on the particular package that meets your unique needs.

Another goal of the book is to show you what you can actually do with a database on the Web. The most fundamental web database application is providing access to existing data for employees, clients, and the general public. But web-based databases are also being used for a number of other applications including: running commerce-oriented web sites; constructing large, dynamic web sites on the fly; and running discussion forums. Part I shows you how to apply the database design principles to create a basic personal information manager (PIM) database and a multimedia file management database system. Part II uses each web database tool to create a web application that implements these databases. Part III discusses three real-world web databases.
