Clinical Neurimmunology is the major reference text in the field, providing broad and comprehensive coverage of the interaction between the nervous and immune systems in both normal and diseased states. Understanding this interaction is fundamental to developing therapeutic approaches to disease and injury of the nervous system that are currently only marginally amenable to therapy. Neuroimmunology is a well-recognised and growing specialty world wide, both at the basic science and clinical level. It is a fast moving field and this is the most up to date text available. Chapters are dedicated to the role of the immune system in disorders affecting both the central and peripheral nervous systems, including important neurodegenerative diseases (such as multiple sclerosis and HIV-related neural degeneration) which cause life-long disability. Extensive coverage is given to a whole array of immune-directed therapies. The book has a strong international team of well respected, high profile editors and authors. The first edition published to extensive and positive reviews and has established itself as the principal reference source in the field. This second edition summarizes recent advances in clinical neuroimmunology in a comprehensive and unbiased way.

Review:

A tough slog through a complex field

When you've got dozens of cytokines, chemokines and their receptors, numerous cell types involved in the immune response, complex regulatory networks, and various neurological diseases all interacting with each other in numerous possible permutations, with a scientific literature that is often replete with contradictory information, then you've got one heck of a problem trying to understand what's going on. This book is a good attempt at explaining what is intrinsically a very difficult subject and in making it clinically relevant. It could definitely use more illustrations, and a greater editorial effort at pruning esoteric details. I read through the whole book but I'm not sure how much of it stuck with me. I think what is really needed in this field for people like me--a clinical neurologist, not a sub-sub specialist or researcher--is something more along the lines of a primer, with better illustrations, an emphasis on basic principles, and clearer exposition (and a larger typeface!!)with a reduction in discussions of complex immunological issues where the research is contradictory. The appropriate audience for the book as written would include neurologists who seek a deeper understanding of the immunology involved in disease states--and already have a good grasp of immunology--and immunology researchers. I would note parenthetically that many of the omissions mentioned in the NEJM review of the first edition have been covered in this second edition.
