This book provides instruction on how to use the OrCAD design suite to design and manufacture printed circuit boards. The book is written for both students and practicing engineers who need a quick tutorial on how to use the software and who need in-depth knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of the software package.

There are two goals the book aims to reach:
The primary goal is to show the reader how to design a PCB using OrCAD Capture and OrCAD Layout. Capture is used to build the schematic diagram of the circuit, and Layout is used to design the circuit board so that it can be manufactured.
The secondary goal is to show the reader how to add PSpice simulation capabilities to the design, and how to develop custom schematic parts, footprints and PSpice models. Often times separate designs are produced for documentation, simulation and board fabrication. This book shows how to perform all three functions from the same schematic design. This approach saves time and money and ensures continuity between the design and the manufactured product.

    · Information is presented in the exact order a circuit and PCB are designed
    · Straightforward, realistic examples present the how and why the designs work, providing a comprehensive toolset for understanding the OrCAD software
    · Introduction to the IPC, JEDEC, and IEEE standards relating to PCB design
    · Full-color interior and extensive illustrations allow readers to learn features of the product in the most realistic manner possible
    · FREE CD containing the OrCAD demo version and design files

    Review:
Complete PCB Reference with Focus on Orcad

This book is the first book I've read that has relevant up-to-date information on the current version of Orcad. The book is well written and can be read cover-to-cover or used as a reference.
The contents of this book should be divided into two categories. The first category is information about printed circuit boards and the designing of printed circuit boards in general. Much of this information will be most useful to the novice PCB designer but the author has made this information useful as a reference for the veteran by adding the source of the specifications listed (i.e. IPC,ANSI, IEEE).
The second category is the information specific to Orcad. These portions of the book take the reader through a complete project using a logical progression from making parts, creating a schematic, and making a PCB. Screen shots often accompany the text.
I believe that this book will give a novice designer the information needed to create a circuit board using Orcad and will give a veteran designer the specifics unique to Orcad that will help to shorten the learning curve.

    Review:
    My review

This book is great if you've got little experience with OrCAD's Layout and Capture software. It's also a really good go-between if you've played with the software, but don't really want to sit down and read the lengthy technical user's guide for the software. Beyond that, it also gives answers questions about the how's and why's of circuit board design that may be difficult to find outside of working in the industry or taking a class directly. Many outside sources and industry standards are referenced for further information if you need it too.

    Review:
Excellent Starter Book for Newer Orcad

Most of the books for Orcad Layout and Capture software are many years out of date. This version covers version 10.5 (2006) and is essentially current for the newest version (15.7 for 2007)

It is an excellent book to introduce new users to Orcad Capture and the Orcad Layout SW packages. It does NOT cover Orcad PCB Editor which is completely different from Orcad Layout. (Layout has a very similar user interface to Capture while PCB Editor is based on Cadence Allegro PCB layout package)

It is also very useful for first time PCB layout customers as it goes into some of the reasons behind details such as spacing requirements, how library part dimensions are determined and how PCBs are physically constucted. This book does NOT go into all of the detailed options of all of the Layout and Capture commands, you have to use the built in technical manual for that. It does cover some of the common options.

I have purchased several copies to use in assisting with training new CAD operators on PCB layout and Schematic capture in general
