This volume as indicated by its title, Current Trends in the Pragmatics of Spanish,
brings together a collection of academic essays on the most prevalent
approaches to the study of the pragmatics of Spanish(es), primarily from an
Anglo-American tradition (cf. Levinson 1983; Verschueren 1999).
The motivation for compiling this volume stems from the proliferation of
studies in the pragmatics of Spanish in recent years. The interest in the pragmatics
of Spanish is not only evidenced by the array of studies into ‘traditional’
domains of pragmatics (e.g. studies of speech acts and discourse markers in
different varieties of Spanish to mention but a few), but also by the application
of pragmatics concepts to the study of other areas of Spanish linguistics such
as applied linguistics, grammar, and cross- and inter-cultural communication.
At present there are no collections on the pragmatics of Spanish written in English,
and the few essays written in Spanish are now dated as well as limited in
terms of the pragmatic domains and Spanish varieties covered...
