Preface
This is both less and more than an autobiography. It is only very roughly chronological and chiefly a mixture of memories of people with reflections on these memories. Or, it is an exercise in philosophical reliving of some personal relationships or encounters in my past. The title, I think, does describe the bookprovided one stresses the words philosopher and reflects.
The first five words of the title are from a sublime but rather neglected short, unrhymed, mystical poem of Wordsworth's. It is one of the few poems of his in which the scenery is neither British nor French. Any lover of Wordsworth who does not know which poem it is has missed something in reading that poet. (See Chapter 13, 8th Section.) I might have missed it, too, had not Lascelles Abercrombie called attention to it in a lecture at the University of Chicago. It is not found in general anthologies and is in only one of the two chief selected editions (Douden's) of Wordsworth's poems. It begins ''Brook and road ..."
