Der 'Tag M' ist der Tag der offiziellen Mobilmachung (russ.: mobilizacija), die so B. M. Schaposchnikow, Marschall der Sowjetunion, Krieg bedeutet. Suworow unterscheidet zwei Stufen der Mobilmachung. 1. die heimliche, die der Vorbereitung für den Tag 'M' dient; 2. die offene Mobilmachung, die am Tag 'M' beginnt und in Kampfhandlungen übergehen muß. In der Niederlage der Roten Armee im Jahre 1941 sieht der Autor ein entscheidendes Indiz dafür, daß der Überfall der Wehrmacht die UDSSR zu einem Zeitpunkt überraschte, als diese alle Anstrengungen auf den unmittelbar bevorstehenden 'Tag M' gerichtet hatte, d.h. auf Defensive nicht eingestellt war.
