Purpose:The book's purpose is help clinicians feel comfortable with diagnosis and treatment of substance use problems and offer the best clinical care possible. Yes, these are worthy objectives. Yes, the book does meet the author's objectives.
Audience:The book is written for physicians, psychologists, social workers, and any other health care professional that works with substance use problems. The author is a credible authority on the matter.
Features:The book begins with a general overview of drug classes and a discussion of substance abuse/dependence. The subsequent chapters deal with a particular class of drug - from stimulants to alcohol to OTC (over-the-counter) medications. There is a further discussion of multi-drug abuse problems, rehabilitation, and emergency treatment at the end of the text. Each section contains a breakdown of presenting clinical pictures to appropriate labs and treatment. Of note, there is numbering system headlining each subsection allowing for quick cross referencing with other portions of the book.
Assessment:This is an excellent text for the diagnosis and treatment of substance abuse/dependence problems. It has been updated in this sixth edition with more current references, streamlined chapters, and revised treatment modalities. The chapters are concise and the information delivered in a clear, precise manner. The two chapters on alcohol are particularly well done. However,I would have preferred a more extensive discussion of multi-drug abuse problems and treatment. Overall, a very handy reference to have on your shelf.
