“I have these really vivid visual images of bikes from when I was very young. I remember
when I was about five years old, my aunt was going with a guy who had a bike.
He came over to the house with his Harley. It had the two-tone tinted windshield like
they had in the ’50s, and on the bottom part of the windshield there was a sticker of
a girl in a two-piece bathing suit. And I remember my mother going, “Get away from
there!” And I said, “I’m not looking at the girl, I’m looking at the bike.” And she said,
“I know what you’re looking at. Get out of there.” “I’m not, I want to look at the
bike.” So I remember my mother having a huge fit over this pornographic motorcycle!
The first bike I ever got was a Honda 350 back in 1971. I bought it from a Harley-
Davidson dealer in Everett, Massachusetts. I remember I went down and just bought
it. You didn’t have to have a license in those days. You didn’t even have to know
how to ride. You bought a motorcycle like you bought an air rifle. The salesman said,
“Hey, okay, good luck,” and you were off.
I remember getting on the freeway, not knowing what I was doing. I turned my head
to see if a car was coming and my glasses blew off. So now I’m on something I’ve
never ridden, in the rain, no helmet, of course, and I can’t see. But I still remember
thinking, “This is fun!”
Another time I was on that bike, still not very familiar with it, and I got caught in
some rain grooves. The tires just wanted to follow the grooves, you know? I thought,
“How do I get out of this?” I remember just sailing past my exit, and thinking maybe
I’ll run out of gas or something. I had no idea what to do. So that’s why I think training
is important. Back then, I learned by almost having accidents.
Riders today shouldn’t have to learn the way I did. My advice to newcomers to motorcycling
is this:
➤ Take a motorcycle safety course. That’s the first thing.
➤ Lie down on the ground and have a friend put the bike gently on top of you.
(Just kidding, folks, don’t try this at home.) Okay, now magnify that feeling by
a thousand, because that’s what it’s like when you fall off a bike. Everybody falls
off, at some point, and you have to be willing to accept that.
➤ Never take the bike when you’re in a hurry, because that’s when you have an
accident. If work is 10 minutes away and I got up an hour early, I’ll take the
bike. If work is 10 minutes away and I’ve got to be there in 10 minutes, I’ll take
the car.”
