At the dawn of the historical-grammatical (philological) approach to biblical interpretation, there was optimism that adherence to the plain grammatical sense could deliver interpretation from interminable debate over the true meaning of the text. The true meaning was taken to be the literal grammatical meaning, something a philological approach could be expected to ascertain.
