In addition to the traditional use of participant observation, interviews, and surveys, ethnographic research specialists have developed a variety of other methods to obtain information in research studies. Visual anthropology has had a long tradition of audio and film and still photographs, now supplemented with video and computer techniques. Focused group interviews, once in the domain of market researchers, are now regularly used by ethnographers as well. Elicitation techniques developed by cognitive anthropologists such as triads, pile sorts, and freelists, have been adopted by many as a systematic way of understanding the cultural categories defined by the members of a group. In this brief volume, these three sets of methods are explained in simple, practical language. The authors describe when and how to use these sets of techniques and offer numerous examples of how these methods have worked in practice. Checklists, extended case studies, definitions, and cross-references aid the reader in understanding this important set of ethnographic techniques.
