In this book, John Casti takes an academic's eye toward 5 interesting areas of mathematics. Unfortunately, his treatment of the material reminds me of sitting in all too many classrooms in graduate school, with a professor rambling and scribbling on the board without ever bothering to indicate why it even mattered. Like all too many of my professors, he leaves the truly interesting material (the impact) to the reader's imagination.
