Abigail was eight years old when the American Civil War began in 1861. She and her family lived in South
Carolina on a large farm called a plantation (plan-TAY-shun). Until the Civil War, most people in the South
had plenty of food to eat. Some of the food was grown in the South. But much of the food was brought
there from the North. The Civil War changed all that. A civil war is when groups of people in the same country fight each other. The American Civil War wasbetween the Northern states and Southern states. It lasted for four years, from April 12, 1861 to April 9, 1865.
