GIMP User’s Manual

First off, I like GIMP, and there aren’t many books out there on GIMP. Like many books on GIMP, this book is intended for Linux/Unix users, but the information will work fine on the windows port. This book is written by the people that write the online manual on GIMP. This is a large book. I’m not usually in favor of books that cost fifty bucks, but, this book is worth it. If you have no knowledge of GIMP, this is the best starting point I can think of. A lot of the information you’ll learn in this book will help you regardless of the application you use to work with images.

You’ll learn about color theory, working with layers, image file formats - and that’s just the beginning. You’ll learn the basics of GIMPs navigation, tools, Script-Fu (scripting language), hardware (tablets, scanners, etc), filters, AnimFrames, and soo much more.

There are 47 chapters of information. With that, this is the most detailed book I’ve seen on GIMP. I like the color section in the middle of the book (wish it was a bit larger though). The CD was nice, but, it was Linux only. This may be because the book was published just before the Windows port of GIMP was complete.

If you have never used any graphic programs beyond Paint Shop Pro, or MS Paint, then this book would be good for you.. You learn the basics of working with images straigh trough the intricacies of working with scripting (which may not be for everyone). The instruction is easy to understand and not a “dry”, boring read. If you take the time to play around with GIMP, you may realize that there is no reason to go with a larger pay application like Photoshop. This book is about 1/13th the cost of just Photoshop alone.
