Description

Galileo's trial by the Inquisition is one of the most dramatic incidents in the history of science and religion. Today, we tend to see this event in black and white--Galileo all white, the Church all black. Galileo in Rome presents a much more nuanced account of Galileo's relationship with Rome. The book offers a fascinating account of the six trips Galileo made to Rome, from his first visit at age 23, as an unemployed mathematician, to his final fateful journey to face the Inquisition.   ..

this book as  been posted earlier, it is an excellent lecture. You meet there Galileo as a very clever, determined and shrewd scientist, which knew very well the dangers of the roman Church but still tried for many years to deceive them, losing at the end. It was an italian, 20 year long shadow boxing!

    Thanks

Thank you Tifif. Another great upload! Some of "The History of Science" lectures from
The Teaching Company may be relevant to this book. I will upload them together. Also, Bertolt Brecht's play...

It is now clear that Galilei was a victim of Church. But confonding church with Italy is extremely confusing. Most of Inquisition was born and active in Spain and at that time Italy was not a nation. Italy, as now we see, is going from South Mediterranean to the Alps; at the time of Galilei there were lots of states mainly dominated by the influences of France, Spain and Austria. Responsibilities of the Church are UNIVERSAL not only italian.
Have all a splendid 2007

It was the "States of the Church" at that time (as were the city-states of Florence, Milan, Pisa, Venice, etc.), all this finished (for the Church) when Mussolini got the power and left only the Vatican as a full-fledged nation and finished the Italian unification motorized by Garibaldi and his followers fifty years before.

UxKiller : I understand your statement but you do a little error; Rome and the relevant Church State finished in 1870 when Rome was occupied by italian army. Mussolini had the merit to sign a 'concordato' (agreement) between Church and Italy so ending disputes between catholics in Italy. But th state of the Church ended in 1870 and after the 'concordato' the new small state (Vatican)has been formalised.
Thanks for your opinion and have the best wishes for the new year
