Most books on genocide consider it primarily as a twentieth century phenomenon. In The Rise of the West and the Coming of Genocide, Mark Levene argues that this approach fails to grasp its true origins. Genocide developed out of modernity and the striving for the nation-state, both essentially Western experiences. It was European expansion into all hemispheres between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries that provided the main stimulus to its pre-1914 manifestations.One critical outcome, on the cusp of modernity, was the French revolutionary destruction of the Vendee. Levene finishes this volume at the 1914 watershed with the destabilising effects of the 'rise of the West' on older Ottoman, Chinese, Russian and Austrian empires, with devastating consequences for peoples such as the Armenians, and the East European Jews.





Wow, this one nearly blew up my baloney meter... Genocide is nothing new, in other words it is far from being a "recent" phenomenon. One just has to read the OT to get an example of this....

When it comes to genocide Christianity is well practiced as well.

Interesting list, foub. Not to delve into it too deeply, I'll just take one of the top, namely, "Battle of Belgrade 1456: 80,000 Turks slaughtered" entry. Would that be 80 000 invading soldiers that were besieging Belgrade fort at the time?
What a load of crap!

As for the book: genocides are as old as humanity’s first tribes. All the nation state did was to improve the feasibility of the undertaking.
Other religions, nations and civilizations were/are as bloodthirsty as Christians and Europeans. It's just that other “cultures” still kill their critics when and if they appear.
