Thank you Mr. Hitchens for writing this book. You, Dawkins, Harris, Gore - and others - are voices of reason crying out in the widerness aagainst the INSANITY of the disgusting, stomach turning Christio-fascism being foisted upon us. America - and the world - is doomed if we don't turn this around and head back to reason and common sense. I beleive in God and Jesus but I am not stupid enough to beleive that ancient fables from primitive tribes are literally true. God spoke to them in a way they could understand in their age. But our knowledge has grown since then and we can go beyond those simplistic, paranoid views of the world. Jesus wants us to LOVE not hate. The snake oil salesmen I see on TV all seem to think religion is all about hate and fear and telling lies about scientific fact. That is WRONG!!! That is NOT what Jesus wants. I encourage everyone - especially those who love Jesus like me - to read this book.

Religion is the greatest evil that Man has ever created by far. The existence about god is open to question, but religion itself is what Man uses to create god in his own image.

Which god would that be, Nikrooz? There are quite a few of them to choose from. [rolleyes] You do know that this book is about people like you who use their religious beliefs to justify every evil they do? Your response is definitely an indication that you are in fact one of those types that will pervert religion to their own ends.

I would add that this book isn't just for Christians, but for all other dominance based theistic religions as well. Much evil has been done through them also.

Guess what? Human beings created religion as a means to control and dominate by giving easy answers and meaning. Its the old carrot and stick. People, who want easy answers to life and such only see the carrot and don't see the stick until it is too late.

Maybe not, but justification for much of this evil will disappear, though. The same as the democratic process has taken much of the evil out of those who rule. Religion is what gives these type the power they need. More so than ANYTHING else. The evil of religion far out paces ANY real good that may have been done with it.

Yes, there are those who mistakenly believe that it is a good thing and that it is just being "misused". They are like those who also mistakenly believe that Pitbull dogs make good family pets as well. That all one has to do is show them love and tenderness, but more often than not they learn the hard way the mistake they've made in that belief. Religion is the main excuse to justify the majority of evil throughout history. Remember, "Power corrupts, absolutely power corrupts absolutely..."

Atheism has caused a lot of problems in this world, more than any kind of religion. Do I have to blame atheism? I'd rather blame the HUMAN RACE. If I were ET and came to earth, I would certainly think that people in this world are in great trouble, not because of religion, but for multiple kind of reasons. Humans are bad!!!! We have been destroying this world since the very beginning, we have killed millions in all kinds of wars, and some of us are fat while millions are dying of hunger. WE are the problem!!!!

Would you believe that currently in the West when religion is not as powerful as it once was that now is one of the most moral periods in history? That most of the wars and violence in the world now is in places that religion plays a major part in the lives of the people. In fact if you look at the justification throughout history you will see religion as the main one. The news media only makes things seem worse here when in fact it is the complete opposite.

Have you ever heard of Divine Right? Its a belief that god give humans the right to rule over all. As for those who are starving you can blame their religious beliefs against things like birth control and the like. You can give them all the food and aid you want, but this problem won't go away until they give up this belief.

I never said that it was perfect, but compared to those times when religion was the LAW, i.e. The Dark Ages, it is pretty damn close to paradise in the West now where religion no long has the power it once had. Where I live no one must go without food or shelter.

You do realize that if religion were still the LAW of the land that we wouldn't be having this conversation, that is without fear of being persectuted for heresy. There probably wouldn't even be an internet either nor any reall level of high technology either since the science they are based on contradicts religious belief. Books, like this, are important to help expose the dangers of religion.

Why did you write this to me? Do I have to believe that God said that? In my opinion, the Bible is a religious book for people who belief in it and nothing else. I really like some Jesus sayings, but the OT is terrible!!.

Why you don't believe me? I'm NOT a religious person. I almost sure that there is someone or something bigger than us, but I really can't assure you nor impose that belief to anyone.

Religion is a very bad thing, but it is a man made thing. Our race is the one to blame for a world so devastated by wars and hate. I can't see that people really hate HATE, RACISM, or HUNGER. We are so far of really understand what we need to change to make some real changes in this world. The Human Race is a very, very selfish race. Most of us care about us and nothing else. There are few people that are really trying to change things in this world.

Foub, if i drop an object - the object will obey gravity.
This means gravity was already there before.
In a similar way, the will to do evil was before religion started.
An evil man looks around for any opportunity to do evil, religion or other stuff.
Religion may be a real channel to deliver evil, but its not the engine behind evil - even if I agree with you that it certainly does not help world peace.
I am no psychologist but if you take evil men from different parts of the world
you may find that they have similar personality issues that were inside them before they became, if at all, religious.



Let me to throw my twopenny into the discussion. Whenever there is some religion related material posted in here it sparkles a flurry of emotional posts. Well, first at all atheists are pretty much narrow minded (or intellectually corrupt) that they try to criticize religion from scientific position. Religion (institutinalized faith) does not belong to the realm of science and reason - and consequently can not be proved scientifically. Some believers also try to prove the religion with scientific methods, usually with disastrous result. Faith is individual, psychological and intimate thing not very much open to discussion. Atheism, on the other hand is the same religion - just negative one. One can not prove an existence of transcendental being - but also one can not prove absence of such a being. So the discussion between atheist and believer is hollow and boils down to one party trying to persuade the other about something, what by definition can not be proven.
Talking about bloodshed etc. I'd say, that that is general human condition to try to eradicate our own fellow human beings; atheist were no less bloodthirsty that their religious counterparts - let me point to French revolution or Bolsheviks.
All the issue is not worth of this charges and counter-charges hurtling through the air. Some people may want and need these religious books, let them have them. There are also atheistic books presented in quite big volume - if some people are interested in them, let them again have them. Live and let live - if all people would understand that simple truth, there would be much less all those horrors you accuse one another with such a gusto. Just stay cool and do not start to charge like a stupid rhinoceros the moment you see something you do not like. Nobody foces you to download and read religious or atheistic materials - they have the same right to be presented to the public and then everybody decides for himself. It's as simple as that....



touche kucyk ... straight on the spot :) ... it all comes down to our very right to differ and choose what ever we want ... me being different than him or her doesn't and shouldn't make me an enemy to either ... Call it God's or Co-incidence way ... whatever suits you ... being different makes us need each other even more ... because each one have something unique the rest don't have ... it make none of us perfect ... and it makes us all, a whole, perfect (or let's hope so :) ) ... we can all learn from each other ... either accept or simply go a different way ... without making a new enemies ... if everyone differs becomes an enemy, one will be his only friend!!
