God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything

I was very impressed with Christopher Hitchens when I listened to him on a radio interview, but the book was a disappointment. It was like watching a movie preview which has all the best moments of the film in it and the actual film isn't much more than that. The book focuses a lot on proving that various religious texts do not contain the literal truth, which is is not a particularly strong case for arguing against "faith". He focuses a lot on religion as an oppressive force on uneducated masses and tends to avoid really addressing the fact that a large percentage of some of the most consequential and intelligent men and women in various fields including science have believed or believe in religion. The depth of treatment on eastern religions is very shallow and cursory. Ultimately, the most disappointing aspect of this book is that it presents the arguments very much like a religious zealot would - careful choosing facts that suit the pre-determined conclusion, blurring the boundary between opinion and data, and refusing to acknowledge even a single positive thing about the "enemy". I liked the style and wit though.
