Gout, An Issue of Rheumatic Disease Clinics (The Clinics: Internal Medicine)

Description

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis mediated by the crystallization of uric acid within the joints and often is associated with hyperuricemia. Epidemiologic data suggest that the overall disease burden of gout remains substantial and may be increasing. Identifying and characterizing important modifiable risk factors for gout is a major step in the prevention and management of this painful condition. As more scientific data on these modifiable risk factors and comorbidities of gout become available, integration of these factors into gout prevention and carestrategies may become essential [1]. This article reviews the relevant epidemiologic data on gout, with a focus on recent progress and available data on other crystal arthropathies, although existing data on the latter are limited.
