From the Preface When the subject of equipment operation is concerned, keep in mind that an equipment breakdown occurs as a result of the failure of one or more small individual components, and not the entire unit.

To properly address the topic of equipment maintenance, this text is structured to explain the design, operation, and maintenance of a number of different pieces of equipment (motors, pumps, aeration blowers, mixers, etc.) that are an inherent part of a larger piece of equipment. It is the author's belief (supported by practical experience) that if a person knows and understands the design and operating characteristics and limitations of these individual components, major breakdowns can be avoided by correcting minor problems at an early stage.

A number of chapters contain a certain amount of theoretical and engineering information, included to reinforce the design and operating conditions/limitations of the various components. This text is intended to be both a reference source as well as a teaching tool. The theory and engineering information provides basic data that can be supplemented by other more inclusive texts, to help solve component failure problems. The detailed description of the operation of the individual components can be useful when trying to explain the difference between similar pieces during a discussion or training session.
