This last section covers topics which could otherwise be squeezed out in the book's inevitable concentration on military and political history. The topics discussed include poverty, the population explosion, migration, refugees, disease and health, epidemics, telecommunications, air transport, motorisation, tourism, education, religion, pollution, climatic change, energy, state tyranny, terrorism, drugs and space exploration. The numerous maps, charts and illustrations help the reader gain a basic understanding of any topic in a relatively sho rt time.
