Hugh Molloy, Garry Egger - Skin Fitness : Safe and Simple Skin Care
Allen & Unwin | 2009 | ISBN: 1741753732 | Pages: 156 | PDF | 1.91 MB

“This is a book about skin; more specifi cally, it’s about common skin
problems of our time and their possible causes and management.
It was never meant to solve, or even discuss, all the different types
of disorders related to the skin. We haven’t pretended to look at
infectious skin diseases, or even those with internal origins. Instead,
we’ve tried to encourage a new way of thinking about the causes of
many common skin problems related to lifestyle and the modern
environment, and to highlight what can be done, by you, to redress
them. In particular, we have identifi ed and offered solutions to
three of the most common, and yet generally unrecognised, causes
of a wide range of skin problems seen in practice today. These are
simply:
• overheating
• excessive dryness (xerosis) and
• our modern obsession with cleanliness and technology.
It is our contention that these three factors, alone and/or in
combination, are responsible for a large proportion of modern skin
problems ranging from certain forms of eczema and psoriasis, to
persistent forms of acne. Yet, they have all but been ignored in skin
care education in favour of commercial advertising that promotes
skin products which, in many cases, have the potential to worsen
the conditions they claim to ‘cure’.
Our thesis is that with skin problems much of what happens,
as in many other areas of health in modern society (heart disease,
obesity, cancers and injury), results from our way of life rather than
any mysterious or unknown microbes of the 21st century. And
while this is not meant to deny the huge advances in our modern
standards of living, it is meant to sound a warning: that we must
not ignore the downside of economic and technological progress
when discussing human health.
If you think this sounds a bit radical and not applicable to you,
check the list of potential problems related to these three factors in
the ‘skindex’ below:
A ‘skindex’ of skin and associated problems
A list of modern skin problems with a possible lifestyle cause:
1. Dry, rough or scaly skin which may or may not be itchy.
2. Redness, greasiness, rashes, persistent acne with no
obvious cause.
3. Limp, lifeless, stringy or greasy hair.
4. Dark, baggy rings around the eyes (‘doona eyes’).
5. Comedones (‘whiteheads/blackheads’) on the forehead,
cheeks and chin.
6. Redness and itchiness between the breasts.
7. Recurrent tinea pedis.
8. Unexplained morning sneezing, blocked/dry nose, dry
throat.
9. Disturbed sleep.
10. Feeling tired/washed out on waking.
If you suffer any of these at any time, check the behaviour list
below to see if any of the following could be a potential cause:
Skin behaviour checklist
Do you:
• try to stay as warm as possible at all times?
• work in an airconditioned offi ce?
• drive an airconditioned car?
• sleep with a doona and/or electric blanket, heated
waterbed/tracksuit at night?
• shampoo your hair daily or every two days?
• frequently use soap, deodorant, astringents, exfoliant,
aftershave, tonics or toners?
• regularly stay in hotels/motels without external
ventilation?
• travel regularly in aeroplanes?
• work, play or lie in the sun?
Most of the problems listed in the ‘skindex’, as well as a range of
related skin problems, are more likely to have a lifestyle basis than
any exotic explanation, despite the fact that you’ve probably never
been told so. The purpose of this book is to explain how and why.”
