In this aspect, the IEEE Orange Book addresses the uses, power sources, design, and maintenance of emergency and standby power systems.

Practically all aspects of emergency power are addressed by the IEEE Orange Book. A general discussion of the needs for, and the configuration of, emergency and standby power systems is given. The IEEE Orange Book also lists the power needs for specific industries and deals with the selection of power sources. Recommendations are also given for protecting both power sources and switching equipment during fault conditions, for the design of system grounding, and for designing to reliability objectives.
