The dynamics of nematic liquid crystals are resolved with derivations of the Ericksen-Leslie equations, detailed accounts of applications, a summary of dynamic equations, key concepts of nematic viscosities, and various flow alignments, effects, and problems. While liquid crystals are anisotropic materials, oscillatory shear flow, Couette flow, and Poiseuille flow are compared with isotropic fluids. The author also covers light scattering and the dynamics of smectic C and ferroelectric liquid crystals. A number of mathematical techniques and some experimental data are presented in the appendices.
