Das Universalgenie Leonardo da Vinci war Künstler, Wissenschaftler, Erfinder und auch Kriegsingenieur. Der rastlose, wissbegierige Geist war seiner Zeit weit voraus. Als Wanderer zwischen Florenz, Mailand, Venedig und Rom sagte er über sich selbst: "Die Natur hat mich so geschaffen, dass ich nie müde werde. Lieber tot als müde." 1452 als uneheliches Kind eines toskanischen Anwalts geboren, lernt Leonardo im Atelier von Meister Andrea del Verrochio, den er bald übertrifft. Schon in jungen Jahren studiert Leonardo die menschliche Anatomie, die ihm Vorbild für Kunst und Technik war. Für seinen neuen Mailänder Herrn Ludovico il Moro arrangiert er prächtige Feste und vollendet das "Letzte Abendmahl". Für die "Serenissima" und Cesare Borgia entwirft er Waffen und Kriegsmaschinen. In dieser Zeit entsteht auch die "Gioconda", das Lächeln der Mona Lisa. Nach Intrigen in Rom findet Leonardo Ruhe in Frankreich, wo er sein gewaltiges Lebenswerk ordnet und auch stirbt. In dieser aufwändigen Hör-Do kumentation werden das Genie, sein Werk und seine Zeit wieder lebendig.
