Four-year-old Steven storms onto the patio, where Travis and Will have been building with large, hollow blocks. "Tear it down ... it's a fort ... make the walls stronger!!" Steven booms. "It's a barge," says Travis, with a note of irritation. "We're going on the river," Will adds anxiously. Steven clambers across the other boys' construction, kicking blocks aside and setting the "barge" asunder. "Build the fort, guys!" shouts Steven. Will looks at the floor and grimaces in frustration. Travis hurls himself at Steven, yelling, "You stink, Steven." Thus begins a typical altercation involving Steven, who often attempts to enter patio block play several minutes after others have become busily engaged there. Although Steven has been in preschool for only six weeks, his peers already actively avoid him.
