Marco Polo ist eine der bekanntesten Figuren des Mittelalters und einer der ganz wenigen Fernostereisenden dieser Zeit. Als Kaufmann und Abenteurer ist er das Synonym für den "merchant adventurer", aber er ist viel mehr als das, ein Chronist der Fremde, der erste europäische Reisende, der mit der Autorität des Augenzeugen vom faszinierenden Raum des Fernen Ostens für ein staunendes Publikum berichtete. Es soll hier nicht darum gehen, den "wirklichen" Marco Polo gegen den "Mythos" Marco Polo auszuspielen, sondern darum, zu zeigen, wie aus dem Sohn einer mittlerern venezianischen Kaufmannsfamilie jene schillernde Gestalt werden konnte, die wir heute kennen.
