The generals of the First World War, almost uniquely amongst the commanders in any conflict, are disparaged as a group In the popular imagination they continue to be characterised as remote, callous individuals who blithely sent thousands of soldiers to their deaths to no great purpose. This is a view that modern research has shown to be increasingly untenable Whilst there were commanders on all sides whose lack of ability was cruelly to be exposed during the course of the war (and exposed at the cost of the lives of the men they led), it cannot truly be said that all commanders were cut from the same cloth.
