Introduction
The Montana Trail was a shorter version of the well-known Oregon-California Trail, but differed significantly in that it was a north-south, rather than east-west, route. Freighters, stagers, and emigrants outfitted at the settlements in northern Utah for a dash across the barren plains of eastern Idaho to the verdant valleys of Montana some 400 to 500 miles away. To these travelers, the Continental Divide at Monida Pass, gateway to Montana, seemed almost as formidable a barrier as the Sierra Nevada was to east-west travelers. Unlike the more fortunate early Californians who could be amply supplied by sea with necessities and even luxuries the year round, delivery of goods for isolated Montana settlers was subject to many uncertainties. The only water access to the Montana settlements was the unreliable Missouri River routeusable for only a few months during high water on the river. And in winter, on the only passable road into the territory, blizzard conditions and freezing weather had to be battled again and again by freighters and stage drivers moving supplies and emigrants across the Continental Divide at Monida Pass.
