Novel Frames seeks to converge focal points thought perhaps to be too wide for a professional scope. We read widely in order to focus our thoughts. "The condition of reading," according to Robert Scholes, "is the human condition" (69). Scholes means to be more than aphoristic. He indicates a specific kind of reader and a specific kind of reading. He calls it "reading as an intertextual activity," where "reading is indeed never just the reduction of a text to some kernel of predetermined intention but always the connecting of signs in one text to other signs altogether'' (11). Why read? Teachers of written literature need to come up with good reasons for reading, especially since students, raised on video, get even more suspicious of teachers than television encourages them to be. Scholes argues that reading provides us with a model for living: the interactive, critical, and productive reader emerges as his model for the political, ethical, and useful member of any collective social order. Scholes's model reader is one with a pen in hand ready at any moment to stop reading and start writingor perhaps break into some other purposeful action. A link is to be made, then, between what we read and who we think we are.
