PREFACE
Jenner's discovery of the principle of vaccination in 1796 was a major step toward the reduction of fatal, frequently epidemic infections. Since the time of Jenner considerable progress has been made to prevent many dreaded diseases. Polio, the plague of the 1950s, has virtually been eliminated through the use of vaccination, and our children no longer must suffer through common viral infections such as measles and mumps. However, improved and safer vaccines with fewer side effects and risks are still needed. Infectious diseases remain a significant source of morbidity and mortality in humans and animals. AIDS and Lyme disease are significant new disease entities that make evident the need to develop new vaccines.
It has been more than 15 years since the initial techniques of gene cloning were introduced. During this time there has been tremendous progress in veterinary and human medicine. One field that has benefitted greatly from this progress has been infectious diseases. The new techniques of molecular biology have been used to understand the molecular basis of disease pathogenesis and, consequently, the information has been applied to the development of new diagnostic techniques as well as new vaccines. For example, a new commercially available vaccine for viral hepatitis is based on recombinant DNA technology.
