This is the Instructor's Solution Manual for Signals and Systems (2nd Edition) by Oppenheim, Willsky and Nawab. An extremely valuable resource. Helped me ace the course when I took it, because the book is not readily available to the public. A must for all students taking a signals/systems course with this textbook and aiming to do well. Softcover, photocopy, about 500 pages, Limited Edition. Complete typed out solutions, diagrams and MATLAB code for every question in the book, odd and even!
Errata found on another web page. I am not aware whether these are included in the book or not.
Chapter 1
- Problem 1.5: The solution to part c was omitted. Answers to parts d and e are mislabled as the solutions to parts c and d. The solution to part b is also wrong: x(1-t) + x(2-t) is only guaranteed to be zero for t > -1.
- Problem 1.21: The answer for part e. is wrong. The answer for part f is also wrong (the negative of the correct solution is shown).
- Problem 1.22: The expression listed for part e should be x[n] = u[3-n] x[n], not x[n] = u[n-3] x[n] as listed in the solution.
Chapter 2
- Problem 2.6: In the solution, they actually replace k with (p+1), not (p-1) as stated.
- Problem 2.21: In the solution on the second line the exponent exp(-alpha t) should be exp(-alpha tau).
Chapter 3
- Problem 3.2: There are two errors. In the first sentence it incorrectly refers to (3.95) as the synthesis equation, it is actually eq. (3.94). Also in the last term of the second equality the solution includes a term a-4 that shouldn't be there.
- Problem 3.4: Second to the last line in square brakets e - jkp should be e-jkp.
- Problem 3.6: The lower limit of the ranges listed for the second two signals in part a should be -100, not 100 as listed.
- Problem 3.16: In part a, the last exponential in the sum is missing j and n. It should be ejk (2 pi /2)n. In part b., the same mistake is made in the FS expression for y2. The exponential in the sum is missing j and n. It should be ejk (2pi/16) n. The same mistake is made yet again in part c. The exponential in the last part of the sum should be ejk (2pi/4) n.
- Problem 3.22: The fundamental periods of the several of the signals is incorrect. Using the same notation of the solutions the period for (i) should be 2, for (iv) should be 2, and for (v) it should be 3.
- Problem 3.23: In part a, the third equation should be d_k = b_k + c_k, not d_k = a_k + c_k, as stated.
- Problem 3.27: The solution suggests using the synthesis equation (3.38). It should be the synthesis equation (3.94) for discrete-time signals.
- Problem 3.30: In part b it should include y(t) instead of x(t).
- Problem 3.33: There are at least two problems with this solution. 1) The first equation listed is H(jw)jwe^(jwt) + 4e^(jwt)=e^(jwt). It should be H(jw)[ jwe^(jwt) + 4e^(jwt) ] = e^(jwt). 2) b_{-3} should not have a negative sign in front of it.
- Problem 3.35: There are two problems with the solution to this problem. First, they incorrectly state that the transfer function is 0 for |w| > 250. The opposite is true. Second, this implies that a_k must be zero for k=0 and k=1. In the solution they incorrectly work with values of k near the frequency of the signal in units of Hz.
- Problem 3.36: There are at least three problems with this example. 1) The expression for the transfer function in the second equation should be H(e^(jw)), not H(jw) as shown. 2) In part b they incorrectly used N=4 in the exponents, rather than N=8. 3) In part a they incorrectly specified that N=4. The fundamental period is actually 8, N=8.
Chapter 4
- Problem 4.1: In Figure S4.1(b), the amplitude at w=0 should be 1, not 2 as shown in the figure.
- Problem 4.2: The plot on the right in Figure S4.2 is wrong.
- Problem 4.21: In part i, the denominator of the last term should be jw^3 rather than jw^2.
- Problem 4.24: In part i, the answer should be a and d since these are the signals that have odd symmetry.
Chapter 8
- Problem 8.1: The solution mixes up y(t) and x(t). The exponent of the solution for m(t) should be negative.
- Problem 8.5: The second sentence in the second paragraph begins "Clearly, is we want to ...". It should begin "Clearly, we want to ...".
Chapter 10
- Problem 10.25: In part a, the expression for x[n] has an exponent of 2 instead of n. The same term is expressed correctly in part b.
