State of the Art in Face Recognition.(2009)

Description

Face recognition has become one of the most intensively investigated topics in biometrics. Recent and comprehensive surveys found in the literature, such as (Zhao et al., 2003; Ruizdel Solar & Navarrete, 2005; Delac & Grgic, 2007), provide a good indication of how active are the research activities in this area. Likewise in other fields in pattern recognition, the identification of faces has been addressed from different approaches according to the chosen representation and the design of the classification method. Over the past two decades, industrial interests and research efforts in face recognition have been motivated by a wide range of potential applications such identification, verification, posture/gesture recognizers and intelligent multimodal systems. Unfortunately, counter effects are unavoidable when there is a heavily increased interest in a small research area. For the particular case of face recognition, most of the consequences were pointed out by three editors of the well-known Pattern Recognition Letters journal.
