I did not take Criminal Law during law school. (Strange, but true.) I did take Criminal Procedure.) After just listening to this CD set once, I now have a Criminal Law knowledge base for bar review based on my bar review performance so far. Amazing. One would think this CD set would be great for anyone taking Criminal Law during law school, especially if one uses Cases and Materials on Criminal Law,(American Casebook Series), Understanding Criminal Law, Criminal Law (Black Letter Outline). I have listened to a lot of law school subject audio. Dressler is among the best lecturers that I have heard. He has a conversational style. He does not speak too fast or too slowly. He has an occasional mispeak, but it comes across as a type of mispeak that we all have in conversation. It does not come across like he is racing through the material or bored. He is not as "entertaining" as Finz, but Dressler is superb. He starts with an overview of the elements that must be proven for every crime. He discusses theories of punishment to facilitate learning criminal law. (He clearly finds the topic interesting, but he presents the topic to facilitate learning Criminal Law. And I found that it helped.) He presents the common law and Model Penal Code (MPC) material together: murder, robbery, rape, etc. He recites the actual MPC sections. The CD set ends with a one disk review, which is helpful. The only bad thing about this set is that each MP3 is about 72 minutes. There are no topic breaks. If you want this topical information, you will probably need to track it yourself while listening.

Professor Dressler gives you a good introduction and review of criminal law in a way that is very understandable. Out of all the Sum and Substance series I would say he is the best lecturer-- in both making the topic interesting as well as making it easily digestible. I listened to his CDs while driving or doing household chores before starting my Criminal Law course, and again for exam reviews. NOTE: The Sum and Substance series are great introductions to legal courses. They are by far the easiest way to get a head-start on your law classes. However, to do well on exams or the Bar, you need to get audios specifically for that purpose (such as Barbri). Sum and Substance is an excellent way to get your review of black-letter law, but not law exam writing strategies.

I have four different review CD sets, received from different sources. This is by far the best. Dressler is an excellent speaker, his lectures are very thorough. I only play his CD's when I review for Crim Law- highly recommended!
