The Elusive Mr. Wesley

Description

The biographer's endeavor is similar in many ways to the task of the portrait painter; both try to help us see beyond the obvious to the essential. But every such interpretive attempt, to be adequately edifying, should be based on full and accurate information. During the last two decades, an increasing number of critical studies of Wesley have provided helpful information in this regard, though not always noticed by the biographers. Future studies will also benefit from the completion of the new critical edition of Wesley's works now in progress. In the meantime, however, we can try to work our way toward a better understanding of Wesley by recognizing that our currently popular portraits of Wesley are shaped in large part by nineteenth- and early twentieth-century stereotypes that were constructed with a specific apologetic purpose in mind.
