The encyclopedia is a wonderful reference guide for ear parts, the mechanics of hearing, disease comprehension, demystification of clinical jargon, and legal definitions and public laws. It also ably fleshes out the sociology of deafness through entries such as Social adequacy index and World Games for the Deaf. The very interesting Miss Deaf America entry describes a pageant created as part of the National Cultural Program within the National Association for the Deaf. It was begun by the late Douglas Burke, who was looking for a way to discover deaf actresses at an early age.

Fourteen appendixes and a well-constructed index round out the text. Among the appendixes are "Statewide Services," "Periodicals of Interest to Deaf People," "Religious Ministries and Organizations for Deaf People," "Residential Programs for Deaf/Emotionally Disturbed Children," and "Training Centers for Hearing Ear Dogs."

The Encyclopedia provides solid, easily digested, dependable information. Suitable for students, patients, concerned family members, and, certainly, librarians, it is recommended for academic and public libraries with medical and consumer health collections.
