This anthology unites in one volume two studies of the Greater Middle East in global politics each conceptual and empirical. First, it is a historical-comparative study of politics and societies in selected Greater Middle Eastern countries. Second, it is an empirical case study of states and societies of the Greater Middle East in global politics.
From the Author
The book addresses development and change in the societies under study as results of the complex interactions between external developments, in particular, the rise and expansion of European industrialized powers, and internal developments, namely the disintegration of Islamic Empires, their transformation into nation-states and their efforts to industrialize and modernize their societies. In many of the countries under study, weak or fragmented socio-economic, political, and cultural modernization, and the failure to establish sustained democracy, created a "chronic developmental crisis" in the last decades of the twentieth century. Specific case studies address major global political themes - nationalism, revolution, political Islam, democracy, globalization, regionalism, revolution, war, energy, conflict, and cooperation - and apply them to the region. The foreign policies of countries external to the region respond to and impact upon development and change within the area under study. That history began with the invasion of Napoleon, to be followed by partitioning of the region during World War -I, Cold War politics and energy-driven geo-political competition by all the major powers. Policy projects of external powers implemented in the region under study thus do not start de novo. Makers of foreign policy of outsiders in the region trod into layers of history created by their previous encounters in the region as these are memorized and re- processed by locals for current use.
