In the first part of The Politics of Human Rights in East Asia, Kenneth Christie surveys and explores the human rights records of Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Burma and Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia) and ASEAN attitudes to these problems. In the second part, Denny Roy covers China, the "two Koreas" and Japan. Throughout the text they examine the competing and different meanings of human rights, placing each within the framework of the country's political history. Christie and Roy address some of the most important questions in theoretical and empirical terms, such as: What shapes human rights in East Asia? How does human rights effect regime security? What were some of the effects of the Asian economic crisis of 1997 on citizens' rights? Will these states, reluctant to embrace Western versions of liberal democracy and human rights, undergo political liberalizations?
