In 1939 the heavy pressure of great powers preparing for the worldwar and direct aggression and occupation followed struck the independent and neutral state of Estonia. It became clear that with the Stalin - Hitler agreement signed on 23 August 1939 (known as Molotov - Ribbentrop Pact) the two great powers had divided Eastern Europe between themselves into their spheres of influence.
Three consecutive occupation regimes (communistic Soviet Union – nazi Germany - communistic Soviet Union) lasted for more than 50 years.
