Sir Harold Jeffreys, FRS (22 April 1891 ? 18 March 1989) was a mathematician, statistician, geophysicist, and astronomer. Together with E.T. Jaynes, he was a proponent of the objective bayesian school of thought. In 1946 Harold Jeffreys published "An Invariant Form for the Prior Probability in Estimation Problems," Proceedings of the Royal Society, A, 186, 453-461. He incorporated the material in the second edition of his Theory of Probability (1948). The expression "Jeffreys prior" (or variants of it) became established in the 1960s.
