This book covers modules B7, C7, and P7 from
GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry, and GCSE
Physics.
Module B7 has six topics. The first explores
how all living things on Earth are dependent
on others for their survival. The second topic
looks at some of the closest relationships
between living things – symbiotes and
parasites. The third topic is about new ways to
tackle problems using our growing knowledge
of inheritance – new DNA technologies. The
last three topics take a deeper look at human
anatomy – how blood provides a transport
system for your body, how energy is released
from food in your cells, and how your body
uses this energy for movement. Stories of
biology in action in this module show how
biological ideas are researched and put to use
in the twenty-first century.
Module C7 has four topics. The first topic
introduces organic chemistry and the
importance of carbon compounds. The second
topic tackles three challenging questions for
chemists: How much?, How fast?, and How
far? The third topic is about analytical
chemistry, which has a vital part to play in
making sure that the food we eat and the air
we breathe are safe. The final topic, about
green chemistry, shows how modern industry
is reinventing the processes it uses to make our
use of chemicals more sustainable. Stories of
chemists in action in this module show how
these chemical ideas are put to use in the
twenty-first century.
Module P7 has four topics. The first topic
introduces observatories and telescopes. The
second topic describes the mapping of the
heavens – what astronomers have been able to
discover using both naked-eye observation and
telescopes. The third topic looks inside stars to
understand what they are made of and how
they work. The last topic looks at the life cycle
of stars, describing how they change and why.
You will see that dying stars can be extremely
violent and that some produce black holes.
Stories of physics in action in this module take
you to the frontiers of astronomy today.
